Angola’s three rival factions—the Agostinho Neto-led Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba; the Holden Roberto-led National Front (FNLA), based in Zaire and officially backed by China and the United States; and the Jonas Savimbi-led National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), backed by South Africa—battle each other for control of the soon-to-be-independent nation.
