The old lower class of Egypt's cities…
1888 CE to 1899 CE
The old lower class of Egypt's cities and towns, particularly the artisans, have suffered from the influx of cheaply made European imports.
Whereas some crafts, like basketry, pottery, and rug weaving, survive, others such as textiles and glass blowing have been virtually eliminated.
The urban guilds have declined and will eventually disappear because Europeans have replaced Egyptians in production and commerce.
