President Polk had ordered General Zachary Taylor…
April 1846 CE
Mexico lays claim to all the lands as far north as the Nueces River—about one hundred and fifty miles (two hundred and forty kilometers) north of the Rio Grande.
The U.S. claims that the border is the Rio Grande, citing the 1836 Treaties of Velasco.
However, Mexico has rejected the treaties and refused to negotiate, instead still claiming all of Texas.
Taylor had ignored Mexican demands to withdraw to the Nueces.
He has constructed a makeshift fort (later known as Fort Brown/Fort Texas) on the banks of the Rio Grande opposite the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
The Mexican forces under General Santa Anna had immediately prepared for war.
