News of the French Revolution of 1848…
March 1848 CE
On the morning of March 18, the police encounter proclamations all over the capital defying the government and demanding reforms, among them elective and suffrage reform.
This afternoon, a banquet is arranged at the Hotel de la Croix.
A mob gathers on the square outside, Brunkebergstorg, and threatens to enter the building.
The mob is dispersed by the police and some are arrested, though they defend themselves by throwing stones.
In the evening, a crowd gathers between the Royal Palace and the Storkyrkan.
King Oscar I of Sweden, who is attending a performance of Jenny Lind at the Royal Swedish Opera, meets the protesters at Storkyrkobrinken, listens to their complaints and orders the release of the arrested, which dissolves the crowd.
Another crowd forms later the same day, however, which throws stones through windows at Gustav Adolfs torg, Drottninggatan and Blasieholmen, among them at the windows of Arch Bishop Wingård.
