Oliver of Cologne arrives with a new…
May 1218 CE
Oliver of Cologne arrives with a new German army later in 1218, as does the count of Holland, William I, who arrives with a mixed army consisting of Dutch, Flemish and Frisian soldiers.
Oliver of Cologne had preached the Fifth Crusade in the Frisan town of Dokkum in 1214 and Dokkum has sent a contingent; the crescent in the coat of arms of Dokkum refers to this event.
With Leopold and John, they discuss attacking Damietta in Egypt.
To accomplish this, they ally with the leader of the Seljuq Sultanate of Rüm in Anatolia, Kaykaus I, who attacks the Ayyubids in Syria in an attempt to free the Crusaders from fighting on two fronts.
