Undersheriff Osman Steele is accidentally killed in…
August 1845 CE
Undersheriff Osman Steele is accidentally killed in the township of Andes in Delaware County on August 7, 1845, when shots are exchanged between the “Indians” and a sheriff and his deputies trying to conduct a sale of farmer Moses Earle's cattle for back rent.
Both sides had reportedly been drinking.
The panicked “Indians”flee, the entire region is aroused, and posses hunt for the perpetrators. (One of their leaders, Warren Scudder, travels as a fugitive down the Mississippi, working on plantations there for several years, after which he returns and resumes his old life undisturbed.)
