Zeng Guoquan attempts his first attack on Nanking using ladders , but this effort is beaten back by the defenders on March 14.

The imperial army now changes tactics, digging a total of ten underground tunnels at Chaoyang, Shence, and Jinchuan Gates, and the defenders, in turn, counter by digging tunnels of their own and building a secondary wall behind the first.
