Andrew Jackson, sworn in as the seventh…
March 1829 CE
Andrew Jackson, sworn in as the seventh President of the United States on March 4, 1829, appoints Martin Van Buren as secretary of state—which office probably had been assured to him before the election—the following day.
Resigning the governorship of New York, Van Buren is succeeded in the governorship by his Lieutenant Governor, Enos T. Throop, a member of the ‘Albany regency.’
