Forrest crosses the river east of town…
November 1864 CE
Forrest crosses the river east of town against little resistance from the Union cavalry on November 28; the Southern cavalrymen had deceived Wilson and drawn his force to the northeast and away from the action.
On the same day, Thomas directs Schofield to begin preparations for a withdrawal north to Franklin.
He is expecting (incorrectly) that A. J. Smith's arrival from Missouri is imminent and he wants the combined force to defend against Hood on the line of the Harpeth River at Franklin instead of the Duck River.
Schofield sends his eight hundred-wagon supply train out in front, guarded by part of the IV Corps division of Brigadier General George D. Wagner.
