Schofield receives an order from Thomas on…
November 1864 CE
Schofield receives an order from Thomas on the morning of November 26 to hold the north bank of the Duck River until reinforcements under A. J. Smith can arrive from Nashville.
Schofield plans to move his trains during the day and his infantry overnight, using a railroad bridge and a recently installed pontoon bridge, but heavy rains make approaches to the bridge impassable.
This evening, the bulk of the Army of Tennessee reaches the fortifications south of Columbia.
