June 1829 CE
Oxford and Cambridge universities participate in the first intercollegiate athletic competition when Charles Merivale, a student at St. John's College, Cambridge, and his school friend Charles Wordsworth, who is at Oxford, challenges Oxford to a rowing match held on June 19, in 1829; the Oxford University Boat Club is the winner.
The challenge is to be repeated the next year and the tradition continues to this day, with the loser challenging the winner to a rematch annually.
