The Westminster Bridge was subsiding badly by the mid–nineteenth century and expensive to maintain.

The current bridge, designed by Thomas Page, is opened on May 24, 1862.

With a length of eight hundred and twenty feet (two hundred and fifty meters) and a width of eighty-five feet (twenty-six meters),  it is a seven-arch, cast-iron bridge with Gothic detailing by Charles Barry (the architect of the Palace of Westminster).
