Cecile Smith, a New York native educated in convent schools, had gone in 1886 to Paris, where she studied painting with Alexandre Cabanel and Édouard Detaille.

She marries Josiah W. Wentworth, and it is as Mme C. E. Wentworth that the thirty-four-year-old American painter first exhibits at the Paris Salon in 1889.
