The Dinshawi Incident, which intensifies Egyptian nationalist…
1900 CE to 1911 CE
In the course of the shooting, the wife of the local imam (religious leader) is shot and wounded.
Villagers surround the officers, and in the ensuing fracas, two British officers are wounded.
The officers in turn panic and open fire on the villagers.
One of the British officers dies of his wounds as he attempts to march back to camp a few miles away.
British soldiers who find the dead officer beat a peasant to death.
Fifty-two Egyptians are arrested and brought before a special court convened in Shibin al Kawm. Four peasants are sentenced to death, many to terms of imprisonment at hard labor, and others to public flogging.
The sentences are executed swiftly, publicly, and brutally.
This event heightens Egyptian political consciousness and leads to the organization of political parties.
