The Netherlands had abolished slavery in 1863, as the last country in Europe to do so.

Furthermore, slaves in Suriname will be fully free only in 1873, since the law stipulates that there is to be a mandatory ten-year transition.

The Dutch are also one of the last European countries to industrialize, in the second half of the nineteenth century.
