Aristide Maillol's style of sculpture rejects the highly emotional sculpture of his contemporary Rodin, and he attempts to preserve and purify the tradition of sculpture derived from classical Greece and Rome, e. g., The Mediterranean (c. 1901).

He wai almost forty years old when an eye disease make him decide to become a sculptor.
