November 1862 CE
Lincoln removes McClellan from the command of the Army of the Potomac on November 7, choosing Major General Ambrose E. Burnside (over his own protests) to replace him.
Burnside, the originator in the United States of the fashion of side whiskers (later known as sideburns), had commanded McClellan's left wing at the Battle of Antietam, where he had been criticized for his ineffectiveness.
