The Siege of Fort Texas had begun…

May 1846 CE

The Siege of Fort Texas had begun on May 3, 1846, a few days after the defeat of the U.S. troops by General Arista.

Mexican artillery at Matamoros had opened fire on Fort Texas, which replied with its own guns.

The bombardment continues for one hundred and sixty hours and expands as Mexican forces gradually surround  the fort.

Thirteen U.S. soldiers are injured during the bombardment, and two are killed.

Among the dead is Jacob Brown, after whom the fort will later be named.
