King's College Hospital opens in London on…
April 1840 CE
It is to be used as a training facility where medical students of King's College can practice and receive instruction from the college's own professors.
The surrounding area here is composed of overcrowded slums characterized by poverty and disease.
Within two years of opening, the hospital will be treating twelve hundred and ninety inpatients in one hundred and twenty beds, with two patients sharing a bed by no means unusual.
