Radical Republicans in Congress pass the last…
March 1875 CE
Radical Republicans in Congress pass the last of four Force Acts on March 1, 1875.
These bills authorize the president to suspend the writ of habeas corpus, suppress disturbances by force, and impose heavy penalties upon terrorist organizations. (President Grant will be lax in utilizing this authority, although he will send federal troops to some areas, suspend habeas corpus in nine South Carolina counties, and appoint commissioners, who will arrest hundreds of Southerners for conspiracy.
