December 1851 CE
The Chilean rebels are defeated in the Battle of Loncomilla on December 31, 1851, ending the Chilean Revolution.
After the failure of the Revolution, the government of Montt will begin a program of political persecution against the instigators of the uprisings, led by his minister Antonio Varas, which includes arrests and deportations.
Dozens of notable government opponents will be driven into exile, including Arcos, Bilbao, Lastarria and Vicuña Mackenna.
Thousands more have died in the fighting.
A major rift will develop within Chile's political opposition, dividing them into a group headed by Francisco Bilbao, who calls for renewed armed revolution, and one headed by Aubrey, seeking a return to democracy by an institutional route.
