Pierre-Auguste Renoir does not participate in the sixth Impressionist show but exhibits two portraits at the Salon.
After completing The Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881, the Phillips Collection, Washington) and Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Larned Coburn Collection; The Art Institute of Chicago), he travels in Algeria in the spring and leaves for Italy in October, visiting Venice, Rome, Naples, Calabria, Sorrento, and Capri.
