1894 CE
Cecil Rhodes, eager to take control of the Transvaal’s newly-discovered gold and diamond fields, attempts to foment a British uprising against the Boers in South Africa.
His colonial administrator Leander Starr Jameson leads an unofficial raid on the Transvaal in hopes of rallying discontented non-Boers (called Uitlanders) against Paul Kruger’s government.
The December, 1895, Jameson Raid ends in the capture of the raiders, a prison term for Jameson and the ousting of Rhodes from office.
Rhodes continues to exercise tremendous influence north of the Transvaal.
Kruger’s anti-British sentiments intensify.
