Having conquered the whole island by June…
June 1191 CE
Having conquered the whole island by June 1, Richard names Richard de Camville and Robert of Thornham as governors.
He will later sell the island to the Knights Templar and it will subsequently be acquired, in 1192, by Guy of Lusignan and become a stable feudal kingdom.
The rapid conquest of the island by Richard is more important than it seems.
The island occupies a key strategic position on the maritime lanes to the Holy Land, whose occupation by the Christians cannot continue without support from the sea.
Cyprus will remain a Christian stronghold until the battle of Lepanto in 1571.
Richard's exploit is well publicized and contributes to his reputation.
Richard also derives significant financial gains from the conquest of the island.
He leaves for Acre on June 5 with his allies.
