Antonio López de Santa Anna, having promised Polk from Cuba that he will work to effect a truce, returns to Mexico, passing through the U.S. naval blockade and landing at Veracruz on August 16, 1846.

The people of Mexico do not focus on Santa Anna's many military shortcomings and betrayals, opting to see him as a hero that never abandoned his people when they needed him most.

Santa Anna will remain popular among the Mexican people for years after the war.
