Sarah E. Goode becomes the very first African American woman to receive a United States patent, her patent application for a a folding cabinet bed succeeding on July 14, 1885.
Born into slavery in 1850, Goode had moved to Chicago when the American Civil War ended and opened a furniture store.
Goode had invented the folding cabinet bed to provide people who live in small spaces with a way to utilize their space efficiently.
When the bed is folded up, it looks like a desk.
The desk is fully functional, with spaces for storage.
