Savage reprisals have followed in the wake…
October 1849 CE
Savage reprisals have followed in the wake of Austria’s defeat of the short-lived Republic of Hungary.
Batthyány and about one hundred others are shot, several society women are publicly whipped, and the government outlaws public gatherings, theater performances, display of the national colors, and wearing of national costumes and Kossuth-style beards.
The country is again subjected to an absolutist and extortionate rule exercised from Vienna through a foreign bureaucracy.
