James Gordon Bennett founds the New York…
May 1835 CE
James Gordon Bennett founds the New York Herald in May 1835 with five hundred dollars in capital, and shortly begins printing the country’s first stock exchange reports.
Formerly the Washington correspondent for the New York Enquirer nationally known for his colorful sketches of the capital's personalities, the Scottish-born Bennett had become associate editor of the combined Enquirer and New York Courier when the two papers merged, at his urging, in 1829.
