1868 CE
Mihajlo Obrenović, seeking to create a South Slav confederation, organizes a regular army to prepare for liberation of Turkish-held Serbian territory.
Scandal undermines his popularity, however, and in 1868 he is assassinated, probably by supporters of the Karadjordjevic dynasty.
They do not reap the reward for their efforts, however, as the Skupstina calls his cousin Milan to the throne.
A highly Westernized young man, Milan takes little interest in his task and is not popular.
