Gabriel García Moreno is hacked to death with a machete on the steps of the presidential palace on August 6, 1875, shortly after the beginning of his third presidential term in 1875.

The exact motives of the assassin, a Colombian, remain unknown, but the dictator's most outstanding critic, the liberal journalist Juan Montalvo, exclaims, "My pen killed him!"
