Raffles Institution is established (as the Singapore Institution) by the founder of Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles, on June 5, 1823.
Raffles has been interested in establishing a college for the people of Singapore since the founding of the colony, and had written on January 12, 1823, that a site for a planned college had been selected.
He had secured a grant from the British East India Company, drafted the curriculum and set up the structure for the board of trustees that includes William Wilberforce.
The intention is to provide education for the children of local leaders in what will soon be the new British colony of Singapore as well as the Company's employees and others who wish to learn the local languages.
