With fewer regular troops at their disposal, the British commanders see the "southern strategy" as a more viable plan, as the south is perceived as being more strongly Loyalist, with a large population of recent immigrants as well as large numbers of slaves who might be captured or run away to join the British.
Beginning in late December 1778, the British capture Savannah and control the Georgia coastline.
