Spanish conquistador Juan de Saavedra, sent by Amalgro in the Santiaguillo, a supply ship that had brought reinforcements from Peru, reconnoiters the coast of Chile.
Arriving in 1536 to the small Indian fishing village of Quintil, Saavedra renames the town and the surrounding bay Valparaíso (Valley of Paradise) for his native village of Valparaíso de Arriba in Cuenca, Spain.
Valparaíso's bay was probably first populated by the Picunche natives, known for their agriculture, or the Chango people, who are nomads dedicated to fishing, and traveling between modern-day Caldera and Concepcion.
