1885 CE
George Stephen is constantly concerned about the syndicate's effect on his businesses and reputation.
The syndicate, however, has turned the St. Paul railroad around, changing its name, restoring profitability and expanding its lines to Winnipeg.
They sell the railroad in 1885 for twenty-five million dollars, and such is the success of the partnership (minus Norman Kittson, who had retired from business in 1881) had already led them to win the contract with the Government of Canada to build the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Stephens had remained as president until 1881, resigning to turn his full attention to running the company that will build the CPR.
