Texas votes to secede on February 1…
February 1861 CE
Texas votes to secede on February 1 despite the best efforts of Governor Houston, who will be forced from office in March.
At this time, blacks comprise thirty percent of the state's population, and they are overwhelmingly enslaved.
A State Convention considering secession had opened in Austin on January 28, 1861.
On February 1, by a vote of 166–8, the Convention adopts an Ordinance of Secession from the United States.
Texas voters will approve this Ordinance on February 23, 1861.
