Immigration to Canada had resumed after the War of 1812 at a higher level, with over nine hundred and sixty thousand arrivals from Britain between 1815 and 1850.

New arrivals include refugees escaping the Great Irish Famine as well as Gaelic-speaking Scots displaced by the Highland Clearances.
