Alabama is admitted as the twenty-second U.S. state on December 14, 1819, with Congress selecting Huntsville as the site for the first Constitutional Convention.

From July 5 to August 2, 1819, delegates had met to prepare the new state constitution.

Huntsville will serve as temporary capital from 1819 to 1820, when the seat of government will move   to Cahaba in Dallas County.
