The Alliance Israelite Universelle, the first modern international Jewish organization, established in 1860 as a direct result of the Mortara Affair, is founded in Paris, to defend the civil rights and religious freedom of the Jews all over the world.

The alliance works through diplomatic channels helping Jews to emigrate and promotes education of young Jews.
