The area of present Greater Bombay (Mumbai) forms part of the Muslim rulers of Gujurat from 1348, ending the sovereignty of Hindu rulers over the islands.
Separated from the Indian mainland by the Basein Creek, and occupied since prehistoric times, the region had been ruled by the kingdom of Aparanta (north Konkan) in the second century and subsequently had passed under the control of successive Indian dynasties.
