1822 CE
American forces liberate five captured merchant ships after the Action of November 9, 1822, in which the USS Alligator (1820) engages three pirate schooners off Cuba, approximately forty-five miles (seventy-two kilometers) east of Matanzas.
This is part of the West Indies anti-piracy operations of the United States, primarily around Cuba and Puerto Rico, that began about 1817.
