Smallpox had struck the Upper Missouri tribes…
June 1839 CE
It had decimated the Mandan.
The surviving Arikara had taken over the almost empty Mandan village Mitutanka next to Fort Clark.
The earth lodges had stood until Yankton Sioux set them on fire in January 1839.
The village is rebuilt by the Arikara, who will live here until 1861.
Another Sioux attack—and the need for a trading post—will make them leave the settlement for good.
