Henry Beaufoy, the African Association's recordkeeper, writes down in the Proceedings of 1790 what little information had been gleaned from the first two ill-fated journeys: that the Niger is reputed to be practically non-navigable, and what is known about Bornu and the edges of the Sahara.
The club’s curiosity has been further stimulated and they quickly renew their search for explorers.
