December 1848 CE
The Austrian Reichstag has begun work on another representative but less liberal constitution, and Windischgrätz and Schwarzenberg engineer the abdication on December 2, 1848 of Emperor Ferdinand (whose coronation oath has bound him to observe the April Laws) in favor of his reactionary nephew Francis Joseph.
The latter claims more freedom of action in Hungary because, unlike Ferdinand, he has given no pledge to respect the April Laws.
The Reichstag is moved to Moravia and then dismissed.
