The Batavian Republic, set up by France…
January 1798 CE
The Batavian Republic, set up by France to replace the defeated Dutch Republic, possesses a government patterned after that of the Directory and is bound to France by alliance.
A coup d'état is staged by Pieter Vreede, the most outspoken spokesman of the unitarian democratic parliament members, who favor a centralized government and of general elections for all adult men.
The majority in the parliament is in favor off federalism and semi-democratic elections for property owners.
Vreede ends the power of the parliament (with a conservative-moderate majority) on January 22, 1798.
