Islam develops in the mid-seventh century in northwestern Arabia from the teachings and normative example of Muhammad, considered by the fast-growing Muslim community to be the last prophet of God. 

A monotheistic and Abrahamic religion, it is articulated by the Qur'an, a book considered by its adherents to be the verbatim word of God.
