The Congress of Gran Colombia intends to name Sucre president of the republic as Bolívar's would-be successor, which is never to occur; Sucre probably would have turned it down in any case.
Given troop command by Bolívar, however, Sucre routs General Gamarra's much larger force (8,000) in a decisive battle at Tarqui on February 27, 1829.
