Louis Bonaparte had moved on January 22, 1852, to confiscate all the property of the House of Orléans, recognizing the reactionary classes in society as being the gravest threat to his position.

Once the resistance had been broken, Louis-Napoleon, constitutionally limited to one four-year term, had proceeded with his announced plebiscite on the new constitution and is gratified to receive the approval of ninety-two percent of those who voted, but the authoritarian republic is only a stopgap.
