Georges Seurat, however, continues to adopt a theoretical approach to the study of various pictorial and technical problems, including a reduction of the expressive qualities of color and form to scientific formulae.
On February 16, 1890, Madeleine presents him with a son, whom he officially acknowledges and enters in the register of births under the name of Pierre-Georges Seurat.
During the year Seurat completes the painting Le Chahut (1890; Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo), which he sends to the exhibition of Les XX in Brussels.
During this period he also paints Jeune Femme se poudrant (1889-90; Courtauld Institute of Art, London), a portrait of Madeleine, though he continues to conceal his liaison with her even from his most intimate friends.
