Carrying the West Coast Main Line across the valley of the River Mersey in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, Stockport Viaduct was designed by the civil engineer George Watson Buck on behalf of the recently formed Manchester and Birmingham Railway company.
In 1839, work had commenced on the structure’s construction, which has consumed around eleven million bricks.
