The insurgent army, under command of General Campos, presses on towards Valparaiso after the victory at Concón, but are soon brought up by the strong fortified position of the Balmacedist general Orozimbo Barbosa at Viña del Mar, whither Balmaceda hurries up all available troops from Valparaiso and Santiago, and even from Concepcion.

Del Canto and Korner now resolve on a daring step.

Supplies of all kinds are brought up from Quintero to the front, and on the 24th of August the army abandons its line of communications and marches inland.

The flank march is conducted with great skill, little opposition is encountered, and the rebels finally appeared to the southeast of Valparaiso.
